How can "Imagine" be depressing!? its about people living life in peace with no war or conflict! How is that depressing???
Only my opinion but John Lennon is a legend!

Have you listened to the words? Summarised, it comes down to, "Imagine a world with nothing to live for." Even if that's your idea of paradise, and it certainly isn't mine, at the time he wrote it, John Lennon was wading in possessions and had no intention of giving up any of them. He was a greedy, selfish hypocrite, in my opinion.

I hate all Beatles songs, but that one above all. It's soulless and depressing.

First, its not a Beatles song, its from John Lennon's album "imagine".

So the line "Imagine all the people, living life in peace" if thats not paradise then what is???

And yes i have listened to the words, its one of my fave songs.

And so what if he "was wading in possessions and had no intention of giving up any of them." What would you have him do? give it all away and live on the streets? I dont think so!

John Lennon has done so much for music, where would we be without the influence of his music and The Beatles??? So many bands since then have been inspired by them and wrote some outstanding stuff and if you understood music and how hard it is to write a good song you might just appreciate his music a bit more.

Again, only my opinion.

John Lennon was a Beatle. All songs by the Beatles, alone or together, were rubbish with possibly one exception.

As far as I'm concerned, his influence on the world and on music was mostly negative. Sorry if you think I don't understand music. Personally, I don't consider the witless witterings of Lennon to be music.

If, in order to live in peace, we have to stop caring about anything, I'd rather have a bit of turmoil.

My problem is not with Lennon having possessions, but with him singing about how people should get rid of their possessions when he lived in quite grotesque luxury. He was a hypocrite and, forgive me, but I am annoyed by hypocrites, especially when they are deified because they strung together some doggerel.

The nihilism and cynicism of the song would depress me even without the hypocrisy. In combination, the effect is far worse. If the song makes you happy, I'm pleased for you. It makes me miserable.

For me, it's that really annoying song that gets dragged out every xmas, The cavalry by Jona Louis. I fail to see what it has to do with xmas.

I agree Neale, I can't see the connection myself, a very depressing song indeed.

Now, as to the debate regarding the Beatles etc, just because we don't like a particular group or person, doesn't mean they can't sing and give enjoyment to others, case in point James Blunt who has been mentioned, to my mind he has what I call a 'raw' voice, but to say if he was meant to sing the Gods would have given him a voice is a bit harsh, his fans would dissagree with you on that score, I will admit to only liking one song of his.

As to the Beatles, definately NOT my cup of tea, but then, neither is Oasis, Blur, The Rolling Stone, The Who, Cliff Richard, any Rap, Garrage, House, to name but a few. though I enjoy listening to REM, Bruce Springsteen, Black Sabbeth, yes, even Barry Manilow, through to the other end of the scale the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Patrizio Buanne, Bond and Il Divo, however, I don't like Vittorio, Blake or Catherine Jenkins, but just because I don't like them, I certainly wouldn't say they can't sing, after all, there are many who say Il Divo can't sing (I strongly deny this of coURSe  ).

As to what they do with monies earned from what is after all their jobs I neither know or care, I wouldn't presume to tell them how to spend it and what on as I wouldn't expect them to tell me, I also feel that these people are entitled to a private life as well, something that Urs Buhler from Il Divo defends fiercely, and rightly so, no one has the right to intrude into someones business like that, I don't care who they are, be they King or Commoner.

As to the coments regarding the sentiments of the songs (often seriously at odds with the singer/groups lifestyle) I think it needs reminding that most songs are about the same old subjects, love, misery, loss, gain, posessions, paradise, nirvana to name but a few and have been since man first found he had a voice to sing with.

Basically, each to their own and we don't have the right to try and force our musical preferences on anyone, it would be a very dull world if we were all the same in our likes and dislikes.

Aga-Doo by Black Lace is at the top in my top list,
closely followed by crazy frog,
blobby,
What's a matter you? by Joe Dolce
Rolf Harris - 2 little boys,
Max Bygraves - deck of cards,
Mike Batt - remember you're a womble
The Smurfs - can't remember the name of the song they did now, but it was nauseating in the extreme!!!
any christmas crap,
Reet Petite by Jackie Wilson
Cotton Eye Joe by Rednex
Lambada, by Kaoma,
Achey, Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cirus,
Slash Dot Dash by fatboy slim
any songs sung by footballers or actors or page 3 girls etc - what makes them think they can sing just because they can kick a ball or perform in a film or play or get their bodies out for the lads FFS?

I could go on, but I'm boring myself now
